Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Guest Lectures
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is the development arm of Japan Government that implements Official Development Assistance (ODA) on behalf of Japan Government to promote social economic development in partner countries. The JICA Chair Program is an initiative pioneered by former JICA President, KITAOKA Shinichi to promote development experiences learning from the initiatives of Japan over time. Japan is one of the “non-Western” country, which emerged economically and emocratically while conserving its culture and tradition. Looking back at Japan’s experience of modernization, we could learn about the efforts that Japan has made to develop itself and assess how the lesson from Japan’s modernization process can be employed in exploring Kenya’s economic transformation and sustainable development. At the same time, Japan also continues to learn from the initiatives of partner countries..

Our Speaker:-

Professor Motoki Takahashi, Graduate School of Asian and African Studies and Director, Center for African Area Studies, Kyoto University and Professor Emeritus, Kobe University.

Takahashi is also a member of Science Council of Japan. He formerly was a member of the Education and Research Board of Kobe University and the Dean of Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies, Kobe University (2007-2009).

He has served as the Chief Editor, the Vice-President and the President of Japan Society for International Development, and as the Chief Editor of Japan Association for African Studies.

He is academically specialized in political economy of development in Sub-Saharan Africa and development cooperation for low-Income countries. He has published several books, including Contemporary African Economies: A Changing Continent under Globalization (co-edited, 2014 published in Japanese and 2016 published in English), Development and the State: towards Renewal of African Political Economy (2010 published in Japanese and 2022 published in Chinese), Development and Subsistence in Globalising Africa beyond the Dichotomy (co-edited, 2021 published in English) and a number of articles on these issues. He is currently pursuing themes such as indigenous industrialization and innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa and history of thoughts in Japan’s development cooperation.

He has been commissioned some tens of researches, evaluations, and advisory works for Japanese ministries and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He studied at Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo, and School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), the Johns Hopkins University.
