Abstract
In this talk, the speaker will discuss the significance of inclusive education by focusing on cultivating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in Kenya’s universities. He will define ‘inclusive education’, ‘diversity’, ‘equity’, and ‘inclusion’ and discuss two effective strategies that Kenyan universities can adopt to strengthen inclusive education to ensure student success. These strategies include supporting marginalized student groups and embracing inclusive pedagogy.

Jonathan Choti is an Assistant Professor of African Languages and Cultures in the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures at Michigan State University (MSU) in the USA. He teaches Swahili and courses on African cultures.

He earned his PhD in Linguistics from MSU and MA in Linguistics and English Language and BA in Swahili and English Linguistics from Egerton University. He has co-edited a book on African Linguistics (2022) titled Descriptive and theoretical approaches to African linguistics: Selected papers from the 49th Annual Conference on African Linguistics and published a couple of book chapters. His research focuses on Bantu linguistics and Gender and Sexuality issues in Africa.

Dr. Choti is the recipient of the 2019 Mid-Michigan Spartans Quality in Undergraduate Teaching Award, 2020 Excellence Award in Interdisciplinary Scholarship, and 2022 Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship. He was initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at MSU on April 8, 2021. He is the incoming president of the US-based African Language Teachers Association (ALTA). Choti is married to Dr. Damaris Choti of MSU’s African Studies Center and they have two daughters aged 17 and 14.
