Colloquium Speaker
Our Speaker:-

Prof. Rebecca Boger
Professor Boger is a Fulbright Scholar from Brooklyn College, City University of New York in the United States. At Brooklyn College, she teaches geospatial technologies, environmental science and urban sustainability. She is here in Kenya working with the Kenya Space Agency and the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at USIU-Africa.

Geospatial technologies include Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS) and Remote Sensing (RS). These technologies have become essential components of businesses and everyday life for people around the world, and include applications such as: using Google maps on your smartphone to locate a restaurant, mapping the spread of Covid 19, multinational satellite missions to monitor how land cover is changing, creating safe transportation networks in cities, where to expand a business venture, and science and social science research and education in higher education.

Geospatial technologies enable us to acquire data that is referenced to the earth and use the datasets for analysis, modeling, simulations, and visualization. If there is a component of “where” in your research or teaching, you are likely directly or indirectly leveraging these technologies. Esri is the global leader in GIS technology and this company offers an incredible opportunity, including software, resources, and training, at little or no cost for 100 universities in Africa. This colloquium will highlight applications for the pharmaceutical and health sciences and demonstrate the need for USIU-Africa to incorporate GIS into their teaching and research to be competitive with other university programs and produce graduates who will be competitive in the job market.
