United States International University - Africa, through the Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IPPIA), in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences invites you for a discussion of the history and current state of disability rights in Kenya, on occasion of the publication of Disability and Social Justice in Kenya: Scholars, Policymakers and Activists in Conversation (University of Michigan Press). This conversation is is being held in collaboration with our network at partners, and it is a continuation of our efforts to ensure the campus community and our partners are appraised on topical issues.

Our host and moderator

Dr. Moses Onyango, is the Director, Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at United States International University-Africa. Moses teaches International Relations in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Department of International relations.

Opening remarks:
Dr. Solomon Njengah, Principal/Head, Disability and Inclusion, USIU-Africa.

Keynote:
Dr. Willy Mutunga, Chief Justice & President of the Supreme Court, 2011-2016.

Panelists:

  • Mr. Patrick O. Onyango (Paddy); Managing Partner, Pat Consult; Member, Caucus on Disability Rights Advocacy (CDRA); Technical Advisor, IEBC Disability Inclusion Coordinating Committee (DICC).
  • Ms. Mercy Mugure Gichunge, Board Member of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities. She holds a Master of Philosophy in Disability Rights from the University of Pretoria. Gichunge is an expert on the rights of persons with disabilities according to the CRPD and other international and regional legal instruments.
  • Dr. Mbugua wa-Mungai is a researcher, author and inclusion advocate. He is the director of Disability Services at Kenyatta University where he also teaches in the Department of Literature, Linguistics and Foreign Languages. He is presently working on advising organizations on disability inclusion practices, oversees the production of a locally manufactured wheelchair, PEPESI, and is setting up a manufacturing hub for assistive devices in Thika.
