Call for Papers

The Criminal Justice program in the USIU-Africa School of Humanities and Social Sciences is organizing the second conference in criminal justice in the East Africa, that will bring together academics and practitioners in criminal justice to discuss issues relating to access to justice and enforcement of rights in criminal courts in East Africa.

THEME: Access to justice and the enforcement of rights in criminal courts in East Africa.

There are numerous challenges that the criminal justice systems in East Africa, especially in responding to emerging crimes, that include money laundering, terrorism, and other transnational crimes. Academics and practitioners and other stakeholder are invited to present their research and other academic works that reflect the conference’s theme.

Access to justice encompasses the notion of fairness on how, for example, how litigants are treated, the fairness of the outcomes in the criminal justice system, processes, and responses in general. The general meaning of access to justice refers to equity as it relates to individuals who come into contact the criminal justice system and its justice delivery. There are numerous challenges relating to access to justice in East Africa, these challenges include (but are not limited to), information and illiteracy, mechanisms of justice and poverty. Academics and practitioners and other stakeholders are invited to present their research and other academic works that reflect the conference’s theme.

SUBMISSION and STRUCTURE OF ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS

Submission of abstracts and papers are invited (poster presentations are also encouraged) from academia, policy makers, practitioners,   public   and   private   sector   organizations, non-governmental  organizations, development partners and international organizations relevant to the following sub-themes:
  1. Development of Penal Reform in East Africa and beyond;
  2. Non-lawyers and justice delivery;
  3. Promoting International Humanitarian Law through the Criminal Justice System;
  4. Corrections and rehabilitation;
  5. Access to justice and Human Rights;
  6. Gender and access to justice;
  7. Accessing legal aid in the criminal justice system in East Africa and beyond;
  8. Author meets critic - The theme allows individuals to create their own sessions and moderate the same. Normally it would be done when (an) individual(s) has published a book and invites other scholars to critic it;
NOTE: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Nairobi Delegation Office shall pay the conference registration fees for accepted abstracts on sub-theme # 3. 


Submissions should be of high standard, unpublished, and suitable for scientific or professional publications. They can be theoretical, or field research based papers as well as practical/experiential papers based on individual, institutional or community experience. All submitted papers will be refereed to blind reviewers to uphold the high standards of the conference. The papers should follow the APA citation format https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/10/  

Papers are expected to have a uniform structure/format, Times New Roman (font 12), 1.5 line spacing, maximum of 15 pages including references, appendices, figures etc.

Abstracts should not exceed 200 words and should be organized as: Title, Context and Objectives, Methodology, Findings, Conclusion, Contribution, Keywords. Please include not more than six (6) keywords related to your paper.
